5 Steps to Increasing Manufacturing Efficiency

Manufacturing efficiency is about 3 things, your workers, your technology, and the layout of your factory. When there are problems with any of these, your company will produce slower and make more mistakes. This means less money for your company.

This article explains 5 key steps in optimizing your manufacturing process.

1. Evaluate Your Current Performance

As a manufacturing company, you can’t improve on your performance if you don’t know how you’re doing. Your first step should be doing a full evaluation of your manufacturing process. You should know statistics like how long it takes to manufacture a single unit of goods. You should also have a good measure of how often products fail the quality assurance process.

When evaluating your performance, the results you get determine the numbers you put in. If you’ve not measured properly, you won’t get a true evaluation of how you’re doing.

2. Keep Staff Well Trained

One of the worst ways to slow down production is to have staff who aren’t well trained. Your staff should fully understand all workplace procedures, and they should know how to complete their tasks efficiently. Now you can also take care of your staff work with employees monitoring software.

Just because someone isn’t completing their task in the most efficient or effective way, it doesn’t mean that they’re lazy or unmotivated. Quite often, they simply don’t know the best way of getting the job done.

Teach your staff to be effective with regular training sessions. You should also have a concise yet detailed employee manual.

3. Have New Equipment

Times change and your manufacturing equipment should too. If you sit on the same old manufacturing gear for years on end, you’ll never be able to keep up with the fastest and most efficient companies.

Take the time every year to evaluate everything you’re using. Take a look at the latest models and see what you stand to gain by upgrading. Quite often, you’ll find that new machinery can cut your production times down significantly.

4. Optimize Your Factory Design

True efficiency is about so much more than having the best equipment or the fastest workers. If you want your manufacturing to be as fast as possible, efficiency needs to be built into the design of the workplace.

For example, if workers often need to walk across to the other side of the factory floor, your design might be flawed. The best way to learn about these kinds of design flaws is to talk to your workers.

If there seems to be a common theme on things that are hindering job performance, you might consider moving some things around. In some cases, you might even consider a total redesign.

5. Consider Automation

Automation is currently revolutionizing the manufacturing industry. If you haven’t already, consider looking into how automating your manufacturing process could benefit you.

Of course, automating the entire production process is a long way off, but if you use automation in the right places, you can really speed things up.

Now You Know About Manufacturing Efficiency

As you can see, when it comes to manufacturing efficiency, you need to focus on your workers, your technology, and your facility design. These 3 elements all need to work in harmony for you to be as efficient as possible.
