Deck Material Options to Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space

You’ve got this big yard. Unfortunately, it’s pretty barren. As such, you’re looking to do something to enhance it.

In particular, you’re thinking about building a deck. But you’re wondering: what deck material should you choose?

There are quite a few decking materials available out there, each of which offers something unique in terms of pros and cons. We’re going to discuss each of these materials in detail now.

Wood

If you want a natural and classic look, you should go with wood. Wood decking is exceedingly popular and has been used for decks for decades and decades.

You can paint a wood deck to take on any color in existence. You can also stain it, allowing for a glossier and more luxurious appearance, if desired.

Wood decking is strong and durable. It’s also comfortable to walk and stand on. Note, though, that it requires quite a bit of maintenance.

Not only does wood decking need to be cleaned but it also needs to be sealed every 2 to 3 years. This runs its cost up and also results in a lot more work over time.

Composite

Another deck material to consider is composite. This is a synthetic material consisting of wood fibers and plastic. It possesses an appearance similar to that of wood but looks a little less natural overall.

Composite decking is great for its toughness and durability. It can thrive for 30 years and beyond, and with only minimal maintenance along the way.

It’s also comfortable against the feet. Plus, it doesn’t get too hot in the summertime. The only potential downside is its cost.

That said, this is an excellent decking material. If you don’t want to perform a lot of maintenance on your deck, a composite deck might just be the best option for you.

Metal

You could also opt for a metal deck. These decks possess a sleek and modern appearance and are available in a number of different colors. Some of these colors include silver, black, and white.

Metal decks tend to have a more luxurious air about them. And this stands to reason, as they’re usually more expensive than composite and wood.

Note, though, that with their high cost comes quite a few benefits. For instance, metal decks are quite durable, capable of lasting over 40 years. They’re also low-maintenance, generally only needing to be cleaned.

The downsides to metal decks? They’re not necessarily the most comfortable decks to walk on. Plus, they don’t allow for as much geometric variation. In other words, if you install a metal deck, it’s going to look fairly basic in terms of shape.

Time to Choose Your Ideal Deck Material

We’ve discussed the different types of deck material. Now, it’s time for you to choose one. Assess your preferences and needs and pick the material that best suits them; it’s as simple as that.
