This Is How to Make a Career Change Right Now

Are you ready to make a change?

The average individual changes jobs about 12 times during their life. Thinking about making a major career shift does not make you a quitter or a failure.

As we grow, our goals and interest may change. Pursue your passions!

Read on to learn how to make a career change when the time comes.

Brainstorm

If you feel unhappy in your current position, start to brainstorm on what else you might do. Make a list of your current goals.

Decide what you want your day to stay scheduled to ideally look like. Create a list of tasks that make you feel your best.

Determine your strengths and weaknesses.

This may not come to you all at once. Use a large chalkboard or white erase board that you can continuously add to.

People do not realize how much they change through life experiences. Even if you took a career test a few years ago, your results may look extremely different today.

Meet yourself where you are at by asking questions you might ask a new friend or love interest. Getting to know yourself at this moment will help you weed through career options.

Research Career Options

While making a career change should not cause guilty feelings, also do not make an abrupt switch without thinking it through.

Begin looking into the types of careers that fit your new profile. Research these options thoroughly so that you understand what each entails.

Within each field, you will find a number of opportunities that look very different from one another. Even within each business, you will find that each job position changes the way a person’s day-to-day looks. Discover all of the details you can find to help you make the best decision for your life.

Weight It Out

Step out of theory and back into reality. What will this career change mean for your life?

How might it impact your life outside of work? What will this change for you financially?

Ask all of the important questions. Then, create a list of pros and cons about your current job to help you decide if you really want to do this.

Speak with your family before making any major decisions. Remember, this will impact their lives as well.

Break It to Your Boss

Your current employer provided you with an opportunity to earn money and learn new skills. Show proper respect and gratitude by telling them about this decision at the appropriate time.

If you feel close to this person and safe that they will allow you to work until your plan unfolds, then tell them as soon as possible. This allows them to find a suitable replacement and possibly even have you train them.

Some people fear that telling the current employer early on will lead to negative consequences. In that case, give them at least two weeks’ notice.  If you do not, this may burn important bridges and make you look bad to future prospective employers.

Earn a PMI Certificate

Making a career change can mean going back to the bottom of the ladder. Give yourself a step up by taking a PMI course prior to seeking out your new career.

This provides you with the necessary management skills to make you a valuable employee. It will make you a more attractive candidate for any position and may start you off on a higher pay scale!
