How to Store a Kayak: A Brief Guide

Are you tired of trying to figure out how to store a kayak?

Even if your garage isn’t big enough to fit a kayak, you can find ways to store them outside. While a shed can work for some, it isn’t always the best option for storing kayaks.

Want to learn how to safely store a kayak outside? Curious how to store a small kayak outside? Then, read on and explore some options.

Choosing Storage Units

Kayaks are delicate and need to be stored with care. The first thing to do is choose a suitable storage unit.

It should be large enough to accommodate the kayak, and it should have some shelving or racks to keep the kayak off the ground. The unit should also have good ventilation to prevent the kayak from becoming musty.

Storing a kayak is not difficult, but it does require care and attention. By following these simple storing tips, you can be sure your kayak will be in good condition when you’re ready to use it again.

Storing a Kayak Indoors

Assuming you have a garage or some other storage space, the best way to store a kayak is by suspending it from the ceiling. You can do this using two kayak storage hangers available at most sporting goods stores.

If your kayak is particularly long or wide, you may need three hangers. Screw the hangers into a few ceiling joists, and then hang your kayak from them.

If you don’t have a garage or other suitable storage space, you can keep your kayak outside, but you’ll need to buy a kayak cover to protect it from the elements.

Storing a Kayak Outdoors

If you’re storing the kayak outside, cover it with a tarp or similar to protect it from the elements. Next, place two foam blocks on the ground, spaced evenly apart. Place the kayak on top of the blocks, then secure the kayak in place using straps. Finally, cover the kayak with a second tarp to further protect it from the elements.

Don’t Have Space to Store a Kayak?

If you don’t have the space to store a kayak in your house, don’t worry! You can strap it to the roof of your car or SUV, put it in the back of a pick-up truck, or get a kayak rack for your bicycle.

If you live in an apartment or condo, you can check with your building manager to see if a storage room is available for tenants. If you don’t have any other options, choosing storage units that fit your needs is the way.

What to Do Before and After Storing Your Kayak

It is easy to store a kayak if you have the proper tools and techniques. By following the tips in this guide, you can store your kayak for short-term or long-term periods. With the appropriate preparation, you can keep your kayak in good condition for years to come.
