However, the good news is that there are ways to combat depression without having to take medicine at all. Sometimes it’s as simple as finding a hobby that can distract you and contribute to an overall more positive outlook on life. Is for you to consider that may help you combat depression.
Exercise
Engaging in regular physical activity does so much more than just keep your body in shape. Regular exercise is seen as a natural mood booster. When you exercise your release endorphins, which are what your body receives as a signal that it’s time to feel good. You don’t even need to commit to a super intense workout to reap the benefits of endorphins. Something like dancing or even swimming can give you a big endorphin boost, and make a significant difference in your overall mood.
Gardening
Gardening is one of the most popular pastimes for a very good reason! Not only is it relaxing, but you also get to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Whether you plant vegetables or fruits, it can provide a sense of accomplishment when you get to enjoy what you’ve taken care of and sprouted.
Studies show that when you garden you get a big boost of vitamin D which is naturally linked to improved moods. Plus the exposure to sunlight also makes you feel more optimistic and warm, which can bring a deep sense of fulfillment and joy.
Art
Do you remember when you were a kid and you would spend hours doodling or simply coloring things in? Remember the deep sense of fulfillment and creativity you got out of it? It’s never too late to get started again!
Next time you’re feeling frustrated or stressed out, try grabbing a piece of paper and drawing what you feel! Remember, drawing and painting isn’t the only way to express yourself artistically, either. There are all sorts of ways to express yourself that don’t involve verbalizing at all. You could craft, knit, or even dance. The idea is to express yourself in ways that words can’t.
Reading
Reading is one of the best ways you can distract your mind when you’re feeling upset. When you read an engaging story you transport yourself to a different time and place and you can identify with the character you’re reading about.
Sometimes reading an engaging story can change your entire perspective on life! So if you’re looking for feeling seen and heard, or looking for help clarifying your thoughts and feelings, read an engaging story and it may just totally change your outlook!
